The first karambit introduced in the Prime skin line and the melee that single handedly forced Riot to develop an entirely new game feature. At level 1, the Prime//2.0 Karambit uses the standard "assassin" equip animation, a satisfying spinning flip that players could spam repeatedly. When upgraded to level 2, the spinning equip was replaced with a thumb flick open animation inspired by a real life morphing karambit, plus added electric VFX. The community was immediately split. Team Liquid pro player Mendo tweeted "Pro Tip: DO NOT UPGRADE THE Prime 2.0 KNIFE. The pullout animation on the non upgraded version is SO much smoother than the upgraded version, keep in mind you can't revert the upgrade so be careful when you purchase it." The backlash was significant enough that Producer Preeti Khanolkar announced a "dev chat with the community" within days. In a Reddit Q&A, Khanolkar and Art Lead Sean Marino explained their reasoning: "For Level 2, we decided to create a unique equip that we thought would be more exciting based on feedback that you all love the unique equip animations we've done on other skins. We moved the spammability of the equip from Level 1 to the inspect animation, so you'd still get the same spin it on your finger feel AND get an equip that feels special on Level 2. Hey, we thought it was a win win." They said they would not change the existing skin because "some players did purchase/upgrade that skin due to its existing design" and altering it would upset those players. Instead, the controversy directly led them to commit to building a skin level toggle system, which Marino said they were "prioritizing the development of for this year." He also acknowledged "taste is subjective and you all won't always like something we think is cool. This was a good reminder" and said they would apply the lesson to future karambits. Despite the controversy, the Prime//2.0 Karambit remained one of the most popular melees in the game, and the level toggle system it inspired became a widely used quality of life feature across all upgradeable skins.
